Don't Know How to Start the Moving Process?
We make preparing easy.
Get Organized with Simple Planning
Here's a moving list to get you started. Set a timetable for getting these items done, and stick to it. Involve family and friends to distribute the work.
Three to Four Weeks Before the Move
- Estimate how much space you'll need and reserve a moving truck for moving day. To find the right one, try our Truck Wizard.
- Get the packing supplies you need—moving boxes, labels, Bubble Wrap® and packing tape. Save time by ordering your moving supplies online now.
- Start packing. Begin with out-of-season and non-essential items.
- Lighten your load. If you haven’t worn it or used it in a year, don’t pack it. Donate it to charity or hold a garage sale.
- Make copies of important documents so they stay handy, such as medical records, passports, birth certificates and Social Security cards.
Two Weeks Before the Move
- Change your address with the post office, banks, credit card companies, magazines and professional associations.
- Call service providers and utilities to discontinue cable TV, trash collection, water, gas and electricity. Schedule cut-off for a day or two after you move, just in case.
- To connect, transfer or cancel utility services in minutes, visit our partners at ConnectUtilities.
- Secure moving-day help. Ask friends and family to save the date; reserve sitters to watch children and pets.
Need a hand? Our partners at Simple Moving Labor can load and unload your Penske truck. Their services are available nationwide.
One Day Before the Move
- Finish packing, taping and labeling boxes. Prepare major appliances and electronics for the move. Secure dresser drawers and doors on appliances with rope and tape.
- Assemble a moving-day travel kit so essentials stay handy—checkbook, credit cards, IDs, glasses, prescription drugs, flashlight, old and new house keys and games for the kids.
- Pick up your rental truck the day or evening before the move to save time on moving day.
- Clean your house or apartment.
Moving Day
- Pick up your rental truck the day or evening before you move. Penske professionals will get you familiarized with your vehicle.
- Check the weather. At pickup, have your Penske representative check the weather along your route.
- When loading and unloading, be sure to bend your knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Don't overload yourself when you load or unload the truck.
- Put the heaviest items on the truck first. If there are stairs at your destination, unload enough items to allow you to move the heaviest items first, before you get tired.
- Have friends or relatives ready to help you unload at your destination.
- Penske makes moving easy: Why sweat on moving day? Contact our partners at Simple Moving Labor for help loading and unloading your Penske truck. Their services are available nationwide.
- Leave early in the morning. You'll run into less traffic, and you'll leave yourself extra time to unload at your destination.
- Check your driving directions before leaving. Penske professionals can help you get driving directions from our pickup facility.
- Bring water so everyone stays hydrated.
- Take turns driving. If you're moving alone, bring a friend or family member to help.
- Prevent fatigue by stopping at least once every two or three hours along the way.
- Take the Penske Roadside Assistance toll-free number with you: 800-526-0798. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
