Moving Timetable
Avoid last-minute stress with some simple planning. Have a to-do list of things you need to get done during the weeks prior to moving. Then set a timetable for getting each item done and stick to it. Here are some of the things you'll want to remember to do.
Three to Four Weeks Before the Move:
Get a rough idea of how much space you'll need. Select the appropriate truck size and accessories. To find out the right truck for you, use our

Pick up packing supplies such as boxes, labels, bubble wrap and tape.
Start packing out-of-season clothing and other non-essential items.
Clean out your closets. Dispose of things you don't use or clothes you never wear. Have a garage sale or donate items to charity.
Make copies of important documents such as medical and dental records, prescriptions, insurance records, tax records, pet immunization records, passports, marriage licenses, birth certificates and social security papers.
Have your car(s) inspected and serviced.
Two Weeks Before the Move:
Contact the post office to forward your mail to the new location. Pick up change of address cards to send to magazines, charge accounts, family and friends, etc.
Contact the utility companies, newspaper deliveries, trash collectors, etc. about when and where to discontinue or transfer service.
Have utilities disconnected a day or two after the move so you have water, gas, electricity and a phone on moving day, and in case you need to postpone your move due to an emergency.
Secure helpers/friends to be part of the moving crew. If needed, reserve a babysitter for moving day.
One Day Before the Move:
Finish packing, taping and labeling boxes. Prepare major appliances/electronics for the move. Secure dresser drawers and doors on appliances with rope/tape.
Put together a moving-day travel kit that includes your checkbook, credit cards, ID cards, toiletries, glasses/contacts, flashlight, keys for old and new house, travel alarm clock, first aid kit, prescriptions, toys/games for the kids, etc.
Pick up your rental truck the day or evening before the move so you can save time on moving day, and familiarize yourself with the vehicle.
