Truck Safety

  • Any trucks travelling through mountain passes and northern states may be required to have tire chains available in case of a snow or ice storm. This is typically in effect November through March. Tire chains are not provided with truck rentals. Check with your representative for details.
  • Your rental may be extended without an additional charge during dangerous driving conditions. However, you are still responsible for your own living expenses. Call 1-800-GO-PENSKE (1-800-467-3675).
  • Trucks take three to 10 times longer to stop under normal operating conditions. Increase your following distance substantially when driving during inclement weather.
  • Completely remove snow and ice from all windows, lights, hood and roof. Make sure you have a snowbrush and ice scraper in your truck during your move. Regulations vary state-by-state concerning the removal of snow and ice. Be sure to check the state’s Department of Transportation Web site for rules and regulations.
  • You will be reimbursed if you need to add windshield washer fluid, oil or antifreeze during your trip, so save your receipts.
  • Keep your tank full. A half-full tank can lead to water condensation in the fuel line.

Hitting The Road

  • Don’t force too much power to the drive wheels; this can cause you to lose traction when driving in the snow and result in a side skid.
  • Slow down and turn on your lights when driving through fog. Keep lights on low beam; high beam will cause the light to bounce back at you from the particles of water.
  • Be aware of wind conditions and load weight.
  • Use extra caution when travelling across bridges and overpasses. They freeze before the road. .

Taking Care of You

  • Use caution when getting into and out of the truck cab as well as on the cargo ramp. These areas are slippery when wet.
  • Vision can be hindered when driving during a bright, sunny day and the surroundings are snow covered. Wear sunglasses to reduce glare and improve vision.
  • Check weather sources before your move to help you plan out your trip. When travelling, listen to local radio stations for the forecast.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Stock your vehicle with basic supplies like warm clothing, blankets, flashlights, extra food, bottled water, road flares and a first aid kit.
  • Avoid fatigue. Get plenty of rest before a trip.
