How To Pack for College: The Do’s and Don’ts

A college student packs items into a box.

Moving into your first dorm or college apartment is exciting, but packing can quickly turn stressful if you’re not prepared. Between deciding what to bring, how to organize it and figuring out transportation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Use these do’s and don’ts to simplify the process and start your semester off right.

Do: Start Early and Make a List

Packing always takes longer than you think. Begin a few weeks ahead by making a detailed checklist of what you need to bring. Separate items into categories — clothes, toiletries, technology, school supplies, bedding, décor — to stay organized and avoid last-minute chaos.

Do: Coordinate With Your Roommate

Before buying bigger items like mini fridges, microwaves or TVs, talk to your roommate to see what they’re bringing. You’ll save space and money by sharing essentials.

Do: Pack for the Season, Not the Whole Year

Dorm rooms are small, and overpacking is one of the most common mistakes students make. Bring what you’ll need for the first few months — like summer and fall clothing — and plan to swap things out during breaks.

Do: Use Space-Saving Packing Methods

Rolling clothes instead of folding them, using vacuum-sealed bags, and packing inside storage bins can help you maximize limited space in both your boxes and your dorm room. Need more packing hacks? We’ve got you covered.

Do: Protect Fragile Items

Wrap fragile items, like laptops and dishware, in towels, clothes or bubble wrap. This way you’re not only protecting your belongings but also packing more efficiently.

Don’t: Bring Prohibited Items

If moving to a dorm, check your school’s housing website for a list of banned items. Things like candles, space heaters, hot plates and even some extension cords are often restricted for safety reasons.

Don’t: Skip Labeling Boxes

Clearly label boxes with what’s inside and which part of the room it belongs in (e.g., “Desk Supplies”). When it’s time to unpack, this will help save time and limit frustration. Plus, you’ll have an easier time finding essentials in a pinch.

Don’t: Wait Until Move-In Day To Think About Transportation

If you’re moving a lot of boxes, furniture or large items, a rental truck can make the process easier. Penske offers vans and smaller box trucks – like the easy-to-drive 12 ft. truck – that are perfect for college moves, so you can transport everything in one trip instead of multiple carloads.

Don’t: Forget the Basics

Bring tools for assembling furniture if needed, scissors for opening boxes and cleaning supplies to tidy your space before unpacking. These small items are often overlooked but make move-in day much smoother. Explore our college move-in checklist for additional essentials.

Don’t: Stress About Perfection

Your room doesn’t need to be fully decorated and organized on day one. Focus on getting settled and unpacked, then personalize your space over time.

Packing for college is the first step in an exciting new chapter. If you stay organized, communicate with your roommate, and keep your packing realistic, you’ll be set for a stress-free move and a great start to the school year.
